Overview
A large keyhole mound at Tannowa in Misaki, also known as Tannowa Nisanzai Kofun. The IHA Archives and Mausolea Department's report notes that it is grouped with nearby Sairyo and Nishikoyama tombs as the Tannowa Kofun Group, and that Sairyo, a keyhole mound of similar size, appears to have been regarded as its pair, with this tomb as the 'East Mausoleum'.
Finds & research
The moat and mound outline are visible, but the burial facility and grave goods are unknown.
Official status & archaeological view
Official status
The Imperial Household Agency designates and manages it as Udo-no-Haka, the tomb of Inishiki Irihiko, a son of Emperor Suinin.
Attribution (jitei): the Imperial Household Agency's determination of whose tomb it manages — separate from heritage designation.
Archaeological view
The IHA Shoryobu 2014 excavation survey (Bulletin vol. 67, 2016) puts the current mound length at 173m with a restored estimate of about 180m (the base has been eroded by waves). The same report restores the rear circle to about 102m and the front section to about 122m at their widest. Misaki Town official documents cite pre-survey estimates of 200m long, a 120m-wide front section and a 110m rear circle. Misaki Town's master plan dates it to the middle to second half of the 5th century and the town's heritage page to the late 5th century; the IHA report places the excavated Sue ware at the TK216 or ON46 stage. A water-filled moat surrounds it. Because it is managed by the Imperial Household Agency, the burial facility and grave goods are unknown. The occupant has not been archaeologically established.
