An imperial mausoleum at Saga-Tenryuji Suminokuracho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, managed by the IHA as the tomb of Emperor Chokei, the 98th emperor.
Official status & archaeological view
Official status
Managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the mausoleum of Emperor Chokei, the 98th emperor; the official form is a round tumulus (enkyu).
Attribution (jitei): the Imperial Household Agency's determination of whose tomb it manages — separate from heritage designation.
Archaeological view
The IHA visitor page does not give its archaeological size, construction date, or burial structure. According to Tonoike Noboru (Seijo University), the Provisional Mausoleum Investigation Committee could not find Emperor Chokei's grave and adopted the idea of a proxy mausoleum (giryo), a place of deep association designated even without remains; in December 1940 it recommended the site of Keijuin, a former sub-temple of Tenryuji. Tonoike states that the site became the Shimo-Saga Ryobo Sankochi (reference site) and was designated Emperor Chokei's mausoleum on 5 February 1944.
