Archaeological view
The mound at Ao, Iga, Mie Prefecture, is now enclosed by a bank, hedge and ditch laid out in a square. Iga City states that repairs since the Meiji period have obscured its original form. Cylindrical haniwa fragments from the nearby Nishihokkeji site are likely to come from this mound and suggest construction from the end of the 5th to the beginning of the 6th century. The occupant has not been archaeologically identified.
