Official status & archaeological view
Official status
Managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the mausoleum of Emperor Meiji, the 122nd emperor; the official form is an upper-round, lower-square tumulus (joen-kahofun).
Attribution (jitei): the Imperial Household Agency's determination of whose tomb it manages — separate from heritage designation.
Archaeological view
The IHA visitor page gives no dimensions. The history published by Obayashi, the construction contractor, records that work began on 13 August 1912 and was completed on 5 September. A government reply to the House of Representatives cites the minutes in the documents attached to the 1926 Imperial Mausoleum and Tomb Ordinance, explaining the choice of an upper-round, lower-square, three-tier form. The period shown is the date of construction of the present mausoleum.
