Official status
Managed by the IHA as the mausoleum of Emperor Kanmu, the 50th emperor; the official form is a round tumulus (enkyu).
Attribution (jitei): the Imperial Household Agency's determination of whose tomb it manages — separate from heritage designation.
Archaeological view
An IHA research report describes a flat circular rise about 15 m in diameter at the center of the present square enclosure. This is the dimension of the visible central rise, not proof of the original burial site or ancient mound size.
