An early keyhole mound within the Makimuku site. Investigation, including of its full length, is ongoing. It is part of the Makimuku Kofun Group.
Finds & research
Multiple investigations have examined the extent of the mound and surrounding ditch. Sakurai City's conservation plan reports pottery of the late Furu 0 phase and wooden objects from the moat, and records haniwa from the first investigation (1992). It does not mention stone facing; a pit-style stone chamber is suspected, but the central burial facility and grave goods remain unknown.
Official status & archaeological view
Official status
It is treated as a site for preservation within the Makimuku archaeological area, and Sakurai City's conservation plan includes it in an area intended for future historic-site designation.
Archaeological view
A keyhole mound at Higaida, Sakurai. Six investigations have been conducted since 1992, and work from 2007 onward identified fill and the extent of the front. The waist and parts of the mound perimeter remain unresolved, and its full length still requires study.
Field notes
The mound and moat are entirely on private land (Sakurai City). Do not enter private land; view it from roads and other public places.
